Portoviejo, also known as San Gregorio de Portoviejo, is a city located in Ecuador. It serves as the capital of the Province of Manabí and is situated approximately 30 km (19 mi) from the Pacific coast.
The city is historically recognized as the city of the "Royal Tamarind Trees," a name derived from the former tamarind plantations that were once prominent in the area.
