Santiago, also known as Santiago de Chile, is the capital and largest city of Chile. It is situated in the Chilean Central Valley within the Santiago Basin, positioned between the Andes mountains to the east and the Chilean Coastal Range to the west.
The city serves as the anchor for the Santiago Metropolitan Region and its conurbation of Greater Santiago, which includes more than forty communes. This area concentrates over a third of Chile's national population and approximately 45% of the country's GDP. Most of the urban area lies between 500 and 650 meters above sea level, with recent growth extending into the Andean foothills.
