Cherchell is a coastal town located on Algeria's Mediterranean coast, situated approximately 89 kilometers (55 miles) west of the capital city, Algiers. It serves as the administrative seat of the Cherchell District within the Tipaza Province.
Historically, the site was an important urban center known by the names Iol and Caesarea. It functioned as a Roman colony and served as the capital for both the kingdoms of Numidia and Mauretania.
