Béchar is the capital city of the Béchar Province in Algeria. It serves as a commune that is coextensive with the Béchar District within the same province.
The commune covers a total area of 5,050 square kilometres (1,950 sq mi). According to 2008 census data, the city had a population of 165,627, reflecting an annual growth rate of 2.1% since 1998.
