Sidi Bel Abbès, also known as Bel Abbès, is the capital of the Sidi Bel Abbès wilaya in Algeria. Located approximately 75 kilometers inland from the Mediterranean Sea, the city derives its name from Sidi bel Abbass, a Muslim marabout or noble man who is buried there.
The city serves as a primary commercial center for a significant agricultural region characterized by vineyards, market gardens, orchards, and grain fields. Historically, the urban area was enclosed by a wall featuring four gates. In modern times, Sidi Bel Abbès is home to a university.
