Biskra is the administrative capital of the Biskra Province and serves as the primary city of the Zibans region in northeastern Algeria. Located approximately 248 miles (399 km) from Algiers, it sits southwest of Batna and north of Touggourt. As of 2007, the city had a recorded population of 307,987.
The city is known by several nicknames, including "The Queen of the Zibans," "The Door of the Desert," and "The Saharan Nice," reflecting its position at the edge of the Sahara Desert. Due to its specific geographical location, climate, and agricultural resources, Biskra has historically functioned as a major crossroads between northern and southern cities. Throughout its history, the area has seen the passage of various civilizations, including the Romans, Arabs, and French.
