The Vogelsberg is a large volcanic mountain range located in the German Central Uplands within the state of Hesse. It is geographically separated from the Rhön Mountains by the Fulda river valley.
Formed approximately 19 million years ago, the Vogelsberg represents Central Europe's largest basalt formation. The geological structure consists of numerous layers that descend from their peaks in ring-shaped terraces down to the base.
