Sondershausen is a town located in the state of Thuringia in central Germany. It serves as the capital of the Kyffhäuserkreis district and is situated approximately 50 km (30 mi) north of the city of Erfurt.
The town's administrative boundaries were expanded on December 1, 2007, when it merged with the former municipality of Schernberg.
