Gerstenberg is a municipality located in the district of Altenburger Land within the state of Thuringia, Germany. The settlement was first documented in a record dating back to 1227.
The area has a history associated with the "von Gerstenberg" line of knights, which ended in 1710. Historically, members of local families served the dukes of Saxe-Gotha and Saxe-Altenburg. A fortification in the district of Pöschwitz was mentioned as early as 1181; this manor eventually transitioned to civil ownership in 1798.
Following expropriation in 1951, the site of what was once the region's largest farm was converted into a residential property featuring an MTS and a small new farmer.
