Altenburg is a city located in the state of Thuringia, Germany. It is situated approximately 40 kilometres south of Leipzig, 90 kilometres west of Dresden, and 100 kilometres east of Erfurt.
The city serves as the capital of the Altenburger Land district and is currently part of the Central German Metropolitan Region. With a population of 33,000 residents, it is situated within a polycentric old-industrial region between Gera, Zwickau, and Chemnitz that specializes in textile and metal production.
