Merseburg is a town located in central Germany in southern Saxony-Anhalt. It is situated on the river Saale and serves as the capital of the Saalekreis district. The town is positioned approximately 14 km south of Halle (Saale) and 30 km west of Leipzig.
The city has a population of around 35,000 inhabitants. Notable landmarks and institutions within the town include the University of Merseburg and a historic diocese that was founded by Archbishop Adalbert of Magdeburg.
