Magdeburg is the capital and most populous city of the German state of Saxony-Anhalt. It is situated on the banks of the Elbe river.
The city's historical records date back to at least 805, when it was first mentioned in a documentary record as "Magadoburg" within the Capitulary of Diedenhofen by Charlemagne.
