Leipzig is a city located in the German state of Saxony. It serves as the most populous city within that state and ranks as the eighth-largest city in Germany. As of December 31, 2025, the city has a population of 633,592 residents.
Geographically, Leipzig is situated in the southernmost part of the North German Plain at the confluence of the White Elster river and its tributaries, the Pleiße and Parthe. It is positioned approximately 150 km (90 mi) southwest of Berlin and is a component of the Central German Metropolitan Region.
