Görlitz is a town located in Saxony, Germany, situated on the river Lusatian Neisse. It serves as the seat of the district of Görlitz and holds the distinction of being the easternmost town in Germany. The town has a population of approximately 56,000 inhabitants, making it the sixth-largest town in the state of Saxony.
The town is the largest in Upper Lusatia and the second-largest in the region of Lusatia after Cottbus. It is also the largest town in the German portion of Silesia. Historically, Görlitz was larger than its current boundaries; it originally included the Polish town of Zgorzelec until 1945. Today, the two towns together form the Euro City of Görlitz/Zgorzelec, which has a combined population of around 86,000.
