Dresden is the capital city of the German state of Saxony. It is located in eastern Germany and serves as a major urban center, ranking as the fourth largest city by area in the country.

The city is the second most populous in Saxony after Leipzig and stands as the third-most populous city in the former East Germany region following Berlin and Leipzig. The Dresden urban area includes several surrounding towns, such as Freital, Pirna, Radebeul, Meissen, Coswig, Radeberg, and Heidenau.

Dresden has a population of approximately 790,000 inhabitants within its urban area. The broader Dresden metropolitan area is significantly larger, with a total population exceeding 1.3 million people.
