Chemnitz is a city located in the German state of Saxony. It currently holds the position of the third-largest city in Saxony, following Leipzig and Dresden.
Historically, the city was known as Karl-Marx-Stadt from 1953 until 1990. In terms of regional demographics, it is the fourth-largest city in the area of the former East Germany, ranking behind Berlin, Leipzig, and Dresden.
