Wismar, officially known as the Hanseatic City of Wismar, is a city located in the northeastern German state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. It serves as the sixth-largest city in the state and the fourth-largest city in the region following Rostock, Schwerin, and Neubrandenburg.

The city has a population of approximately 43,000 inhabitants. Historically, it was recognized as the third-largest port city in former East Germany, trailing only behind Rostock and Stralsund.
