Stralsund, officially known as the Hanseatic City of Stralsund, is a city located in the northeastern German state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. It serves as the second-largest city in the Pomeranian part of the state and ranks as the fifth-largest city overall, following Rostock, Schwerin, Neubrandenburg, and Greifswald.
The city is situated on the southern coast of the Strelasund. This sound of the Baltic Sea serves as a geographical boundary separating the island of Rügen from the Pomeranian mainland.
