Pirmasens is an independent town located in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate in Germany. It is situated near the national border with France.
The city was historically well known for its manufacture of shoes. The surrounding rural district, which was formerly known as Landkreis Pirmasens from 1818 until 1997, was renamed to Südwestpfalz.
