Lviv is the fifth-largest city in Ukraine and serves as the primary urban center of the western region of the country. With a population of 723,403, it functions as the administrative seat for Lviv Oblast, Lviv Raion, and the Lviv urban hromada.
The city is recognized as one of Ukraine's main cultural centers. It was named in honor of Leo I of Galicia, who was the eldest son of Daniel, King of Ruthenia. Throughout its history, the city has been known by several different names.
