Wuppertal is a city located in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia in western Germany. It serves as the capital and largest city of the Bergisches Land region. With a population of 355,000, it ranks as the seventh-largest city in North Rhine-Westphalia and the 17th-largest city in Germany.
The city was founded in 1929 through the merger of Elberfeld, Barmen, Ronsdorf, Cronenberg, and Vohwinkel. Although it was initially named "Barmen-Elberfeld," it officially adopted the name Wuppertal in 1930.
