It is situated northwest of Düsseldorf, with its center positioned just a few kilometers to the west of the river Rhine. The borough of Uerdingen serves as a specific area within the city located directly on the riverbank.
The city is historically recognized for its economic past and is frequently referred to as the "Velvet and Silk City." It is accessible via major transport routes, specifically the A57 autobahn, which connects Cologne and Nijmegen, and the A44 autobahn, which links Aachen, Düsseldorf, Dortmund, and Kassel.
