Hückelhoven is a town located in the district of Heinsberg within the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It is situated on the river Rur and lies approximately 10 km east of Heinsberg, 20 km southwest of Mönchengladbach, and about 15 km from the border with the Netherlands.
The town's development from a village into an urban center was primarily driven by the coal mining industry. A notable landmark of this industrial history is the Sophia-Jacoba colliery, which opened in 1914 and remained in operation until its closure in 1997.
