Salzgitter is an independent city located in the southeast region of Lower Saxony, Germany. It is situated geographically between the cities of Hildesheim and Braunschweig. Along with Wolfsburg and Braunschweig, Salzgitter is classified as one of the seven Oberzentren (major centers) of Lower Saxony.
The city covers an area of 223.92 square kilometres (86.46 sq mi), making it the largest city by area in Lower Saxony and among the largest in Germany. It has a population of 107,674 inhabitants. Originally formed from a collection of small towns and villages, modern Salzgitter consists of 31 boroughs characterized as compact conurbations separated by wide stretches of open country.
