Lüneburg, officially known as the Hanseatic City of Lüneburg, is a town located in the German state of Lower Saxony. Situated approximately 50 km (31 mi) southeast of Hamburg, it belongs to the city's wider metropolitan region and serves as the capital of the district that bears its name.
The city has a population of roughly 77,000 people, while its broader urban area—which includes the surrounding communities of Adendorf, Bardowick, Barendorf, and Reppenstedt—houses around 103,000 residents. In recognition of its historical membership in the Hanseatic League, Lüneburg has been permitted to use the title Hansestadt in its name since 2007.
Lüneburg is also home to Leuphana University. The town is recognized for its historical significance as a former member of the Hanseatic League and remains an important administrative and educational center within its region.
