Kaufungen is a municipality located in the district of Kassel within the state of Hesse, Germany. It is situated approximately 10 kilometres east of the city of Kassel.
The municipality is geographically defined by its location in the narrow valley of the river Losse. It is surrounded by the steep, wooded hills of the Kaufunger Wald.
