Kassel is a city located on the Fulda River in northern Hesse, situated in central Germany. It serves as the administrative seat for both the district of Kassel and the Regierungsbezirk Kassel. As of December 2020, the city had a population of 201,048 inhabitants.
The city was formerly the capital of the state of Hesse-Kassel and is characterized by its numerous palaces and parks. Notable among these is the Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe, which is designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Kassel is also recognized for hosting the documenta exhibitions of contemporary art.
The city features a multicultural population and is home to a public university that enrolled 25,000 students in 2018.
