Rottenbuch is a municipality located in the Weilheim-Schongau district of Bavaria, Germany. The name of the location originates from a beech tree clearing, which is a common naming convention for places within Germany.
The area is notable as the site of the Rottenbuch Abbey church. Historical records indicate that some hermits or ascetics may have lived in Rottenbuch following a monastic way of life as early as 950. The first official historical mention occurred in 1073, when Welf I gifted large tracts of land on both sides of the Ammer river to an already established Augustinian monastery.
