Munich is the capital and most populous city of Bavaria, located in southern Germany. Situated on the river Isar north of the Alps, it serves as the seat of the Upper Bavarian administrative region. As of November 2024, the city has a population of 1,604,384, making it the third-largest city in Germany following Berlin and Hamburg.

The city is notable for being the largest German municipality that is not its own state and ranks as the 11th-largest city in the European Union. It is also the most densely populated municipality in Germany, with a density of 4,800 people per km2. Economically, the Munich Metropolitan Region is the third-largest metropolitan region in the EU by GDP.
