Miesbach is a town located in Bavaria, Germany, serving as the capital of the Miesbach district. Situated at an altitude of 697 metres above sea level, the town is positioned approximately 48 km southeast of Munich. The surrounding district covers roughly 863.50 km2 of alpine headlands and was home to a population of 11,477 as of 2017.
Founded around the year 1000, Miesbach served as the seat of the County of Hohenwaldeck for several centuries. The town possesses a historical identity as both a mining village and a pilgrimage site, features that remain visible in its current landscape. Additionally, during the 19th century, Miesbach became a central hub for the conservation movement regarding traditional costumes, known as Tracht.
The town is located near Lake Schliersee and Lake Tegernsee. These lakes are home to several internationally renowned spas, including Bad Wiessee, Rottach-Egern, and Tegernsee.
