Coburg is a city located in the Upper Franconia region of Bavaria, Germany, situated along the Itz river. Historically, it served as an important administrative center, functioning as one of the capitals for both the Duchy of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha and the Duchy of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld until the revolution of 1918.
The city was long part of the Thuringian states of the Wettin line. It did not officially join the state of Bavaria until 1920, a transition that occurred by popular vote. Today, it remains a notable historical site within the Bavarian region.
