Augsburg is a city located in the Bavarian part of Swabia, Germany. Situated approximately 50 kilometres (31 mi) west of Munich, it serves as the regional seat of the Regierungsbezirk Swabia and functions as an urban district housing the institutions of the Landkreis Augsburg.
The city is characterized by its well-preserved Altstadt and its status as a university town. It ranks as the third-largest city in Bavaria, with a population of 304,000 residents and a metropolitan area totaling 885,000 people.
