Schwäbisch Gmünd is a city located in the eastern part of the German state of Baden-Württemberg. It serves as a significant urban center in the East Württemberg region, holding a population of approximately 60,000 residents.
The city is currently the second largest municipality in the Ostalb district, following Aalen. Since 1956, it has held the status of a Große Kreisstadt, which identifies it as a chief city under district administration. Historically, Schwäbisch Gmünd served as the administrative capital of its own rural district until a local government reorganization took effect on January 1, 1973.
