Polis

Cyprus

Polis is a city located in Cyprus. The name originates from the Ancient Greek word for "city," which historically carried distinct socio-political connotations that differ from modern usage.

In ancient Greece, the concept of the polis represented the native land itself rather than a settlement within a larger country. While the modern Greek term for city (póli) is situated within a chóra (country), the ancient polis was considered the primary territory and demanded supreme loyalty from its citizens. In this historical context, chóra referred strictly to the countryside, as ancient Greece was not a sovereign nation but rather territory occupied by Hellenes who shared common dialects of Ancient Greek.
