Protaras is a predominantly tourist resort located in Cyprus. It falls under the administrative jurisdiction of the Municipality of Paralimni.
In ancient times, the area was home to the city-state of Leukolla. The location featured a small, safe harbor where Demetrius Poliorketes sought refuge in 306 BC while waiting for Ptolemy, one of the successors of Alexander the Great. Following a battle in which Ptolemy was defeated and fled to Egypt, Cyprus was briefly held by Demetrius.
The region is also known as "the land of windmills," a designation that preserves a nostalgic quality of the past.
