Porto Inglês is a city located in the southwestern part of the island of Maio, situated in southeastern Cape Verde. It serves as the primary urban settlement of the island and functions as the seat of the Maio Municipality. As of 2010, the town had a recorded population of 2,971 residents.
The city's name originates from English ships that historically exported salt produced on the island of Maio from this location; salt exploitation in the area continued until the 19th century. Additionally, the town is associated with the inconclusive Battle of Maio, which took place between British and French frigate squadrons near the city on January 23, 1814, during the final stages of the Napoleonic Wars.
