The town is notably recognized as the terminal station for the first railroad constructed in both Cuba and Latin America in 1837. It also hosts "Charangas de Bejucal," which is one of the most popular and traditional carnival festivals in the country. The area holds historical military significance, having hosted Soviet nuclear warheads during the Cuban Missile Crisis. It is also believed to host a signals intelligence listening station operated by the People's Liberation Army.
