Matanzas is the capital city of the Matanzas Province in Cuba. It is situated on the northern shore of the island, specifically along the Bay of Matanzas. The city is located approximately 102 kilometres (63 miles) east of Havana and 32 kilometres (20 miles) west of the resort town of Varadero.
The city is recognized for its rich cultural heritage, which includes a notable history of poetry and Afro-Cuban folklore. It serves as a significant regional center for these cultural expressions within the province.
