Guanabacoa is a colonial township located in eastern Havana, Cuba. It serves as one of the 15 municipalities that comprise the city. Historically, the area served as the capital of Cuba in 1555 following an attack on Havana by the French pirate Jacques de Sores.
The township is notable for its historical significance in Santería and houses the first African Cabildo in Havana. It was also the site of the Battle of Guanabacoa, a skirmish between British and Spanish troops during the Seven Years' War. Due to its history as a former capital, the location inspired the Cuban saying "Like putting Havana in Guanabacoa," which refers to attempting to fit something too large into an insufficiently small space.
