Monterrey is the capital and largest city of the northeastern Mexican state of Nuevo León. It serves as the primary anchor for the Monterrey metropolitan area, which is the second-largest metropolitan area in Mexico with an estimated population of 5,347,000 as of 2026. The city proper had a population of 1,142,194 according to the 2020 census.
Situated at the foothills of the Sierra Madre Oriental, Monterrey is recognized as a major business and industrial hub for both Mexico and the Americas. It is frequently considered the richest city in Latin America.
