El Pinal

Colombia

El Piñal was a historical port located in the Pearl River Delta area. It was temporarily granted to the Spanish by Cantonese officials of the Ming dynasty between 1598 and 1600.

The Spanish presence at El Piñal was perceived as a threat to the Portuguese monopoly on Chinese trade during the 16th century, which provoked a violent reaction from nearby Macau. The settlement was soon abandoned, and its exact geographical location remains a subject of scholarly debate.
