San Ángel is a colonia (neighborhood) situated in the southwest region of Mexico City within the Álvaro Obregón borough. Historically, the area was known as Tenanitla during the pre-Hispanic period before it transitioned into a rural community centered around the San Ángel Mártir monastery school.
The neighborhood's name is derived from said monastery, which remained the focal point of the local community until its closure in the 19th and 20th centuries. Following this period, the area was integrated into the urban sprawl of Mexico City while retaining many historic buildings. Today, it is notable for housing El Carmen, one of the city's most visited museums, and hosting the annual Feria de las Flores, a flower fair held since 1856.
