El Carmen de Bolívar is a municipality located in the department of Bolívar, Colombia. Situated approximately 114 km southeast of Cartagena de Indias, it lies within the orographic system of the Montes de María. It serves as the largest population center and the primary hub for economic and commercial activity within its subregion.
The municipality is the third most populated in the department and functions as a significant agricultural center. Known as "the agricultural and food pantry of the department of Bolívar," it supplies a wide variety of products to the region, including avocado, tobacco, cocoa, banana, yam, and sesame. Due to its extensive involvement in food processing—producing items such as Chepacorinas Cookies, Coco Casadilla, and Panochas—it is also referred to as the "Sweet City of Colombia."
