Ibagué is the capital city of Tolima, one of the 32 departments in the Republic of Colombia. Located in the center of the country on the central mountain range of the Colombian Andes, it sits near Nevado del Tolima. The city was founded on October 14, 1550, by the Spanish captain Andrés López de Galarza.
As a major urban center, Ibagué is one of Colombia's most populous cities, with a municipal population of 544,132. It serves as the primary epicenter for political, economic, administrative, business, art, culture, and tourism activities in the region. The city hosts key government institutions, including the Government of Tolima, the Departmental Assembly, and the Attorney General's Office.
The municipality is organized into 13 communes and a rural area consisting of 17 corregimientos. It remains a significant administrative hub for the department of Tolima.
