The Alpujarra is a natural and historical region located on the south slopes of the Sierra Nevada and its adjacent valley in Andalusia, Spain. The area sits at an average elevation of 1,200 metres (4,000 ft) above sea level and extends across two provinces: Granada and Almería. It is frequently referred to in the plural as "Las Alpujarras."
The name of the region has Arabic origins, with the most widely accepted interpretation being that it derives from al-basharāt (البَشَرَات), which translates to something similar to "sierra of pastures." The administrative center for the portion of the region in Granada is Órgiva, while Alhama de Almería serves as the center for the part located in Almería.
