Galeras is an active stratovolcano located in the Colombian department of Nariño, situated near the departmental capital of Pasto. The volcano's summit reaches an elevation of 4,276 metres (14,029 ft) above sea level.
The site is characterized by its frequent eruptive history, with the first recorded eruption occurring on December 7, 1580, during the Spanish conquest. It is currently recognized as the most active volcano in Colombia. A notable historical event occurred in 1993 when an eruption resulted in nine deaths, including six scientists who were sampling gases and taking gravity measurements inside the crater to assist in predicting future activity.
