Sucre, officially known as La Ilustre y Heroica Sucre, is the de jure capital city of Bolivia and the capital of the Chuquisaca Department. It is situated in the south-central part of the country and ranks as the sixth most populous city in Bolivia. Historically, the city has been known by several names, including La Plata, Charcas, and Chuquisaca.
Located at an elevation of 2,790 meters (9,150 feet), Sucre is the second-highest capital city in the world, surpassed only by Quito. This high altitude results in a subtropical highland climate characterized by cool temperatures throughout the year. The surrounding region is predominantly inhabited by people of Quechua background, with additional influences from Aymara communities.
