San Gil is a town and municipality located in the Department of Santander in northeastern Colombia. It is situated approximately 300 km from Bogotá and 95 km from Bucaramanga, the capital of the department. Founded in 1689, the municipality has a history spanning over 300 years.
As of 2020, San Gil had an urban population of 51,874, making it the third largest urban area in Santander following Bucaramanga and Barrancabermeja. In 2004, the town was officially designated as the tourist capital of the region due to its diverse outdoor activities, which include rafting, caving, kayaking, and hiking.
