Santiago, also known as Santiago de Chile, is the capital and largest city of Chile. It is one of the largest cities in the Americas and serves as the primary anchor for the Santiago Metropolitan Region.
The city is situated within the Santiago Basin in the Chilean Central Valley, positioned between the Andes mountains to the east and the Chilean Coastal Range to the west. Most of the urban area lies at an elevation between 500 and 650 meters above sea level, with recent growth extending into the Andean foothills.
The conurbation of Greater Santiago comprises more than forty communes. This region is a major economic hub, concentrating over a third of Chile's national population and approximately 45% of the country's GDP.
