Ipiales is a city and Catholic bishopric located in the Nariño Department of southern Colombia. Situated at an elevation of approximately 2,950 meters, it lies on the high plateau known as "Tuquerres e Ipiales," roughly 82 kilometers from Pasto, the department's capital. The city is positioned near the border with Ecuador.
The local economy is primarily driven by trade between Colombia and Ecuador. Ipiales is also recognized by the nickname "la ciudad de las nubes verdes" due to the greenish clouds that occasionally appear over the area, particularly in the afternoon. A notable local culinary specialty is the guinea pig, or cavy, which is known as kuy or kuwi.
